Starting a small business is exciting but…

Starting a business is exciting and eye opening but it can also be overwhelming and stressful. So where have we been the few months and why have we been so absent online as of late? Well, in truth, we have been being us. Both James and I work full time, we have a house and a mortgage, a fur baby, hobbies, family and friends in opposite sides of the country and a life to lead.

When we first had the idea of Touch of Tweed, I will be honest, I had no idea just how much time, effort and capital would be required. Everything you see with Touch of Tweed we have put our heart and soul into but we can’t do everything in one go. We sort the accounts as much as possible, we run the social media, we come up with the designs, we source the fabrics, we source the manufacturers, we attend meetings, we network, we design the range, we attend the shows but we do only have 24 hours in a day and two pairs of hands.

What I, in particular have come to learn over the last few months or so while I have been busy enjoying myself is that it is ok to do just that. Hand on heart I would love Touch of Tweed to take off, what small business owner doesn’t want that to happen, but equally I am fortunate enough to have a full time job that I like, it pays the bills and there is no pressure for me to leave and take a risk and run with Touch of Tweed only. Therefore we can build it up slowly, at our leisure; the hare didn’t win the race the tortoise did.  Although, yes I can easily put in the late nights, the weekends and get more done towards the business and I tried so hard with social media before I had a break and I have let it become stagnant for a few months which is infuriating, but I also need to think of myself and have time to be me and time to chill.
